Alberta Nurses Support Family Caregiver Well-being
~From Caregiver-Centered Care
One in four Canadians are family caregivers. Individuals, who support family members, friends, and neighbors with chronic health issues, disabilities, or functional limitations. The level of support provided varies based on recipient need and may include activities of daily living, care coordination, medication administration and wound care. Family caregivers are diverse in age, background, and gender, and many provide caregiving in addition to working a full or part-time job or while navigating their own health challenges.
Alberta nurses recognize the importance of supporting family caregivers as partners in care by adopting a Caregiver-Centered Care approach when engaging with family caregivers in their practice. Caregiver-Centered Care is person-centered care for family caregivers. It recognizes the important contributions of family caregivers in healthcare and works to build collaborative, supportive partnerships between health professionals and family caregivers.
The University of Alberta, Department of Family Medicine in partnership with family caregivers and health and community care professionals has developed free, online Caregiver-Centered Care education for the health workforce. This education builds the competence and confidence of health and social care professionals to support family caregivers in their caregiving role, enable family caregivers in decision-making about available services and care management, and fosters caregiver well-being.
