As of March 2023, an amendment to the Mental Health Services Protection Regulation limited prescribing short-acting opioids for the management of opioid use disorder to a small number of AHS-run facilities. Prior to this, physicians and nurse practitioners were able prescribe short-acting opioids (also known as prescribed safer supply) to their clients to help separate them from the unregulated drug supply. ANCHR’s President, Patty Wilson, will present on the complexities of this change to prescribing authority and the evidence underpinning prescribed safer supply.
