For nurses, privacy isn’t abstract or administrative — it shows up in handoffs, documentation, team communication, and digital tools used every shift. As AI, automation, and secure messaging become more common, everyday nursing actions now carry new privacy and professional risks. This session will help nurses understand how AI and other digital tools can fit under Alberta’s Health Information Act (HIA) for safe, ethical, and efficient nursing practice.
By the end of the session, nurses will be able to:
- Recognize privacy as a patient-safety issue, not just a policy requirement
- Understand the risks when AI and digital tools use health information
- Identify high-risk digital workflows commonly used by NPs
- Apply practical guardrails to select and use digital tools safely and confidently
- Know when something is a mistake vs. a reportable privacy breach
Nursing continuing competencies:
- LPNs: Professional Accountability and Responsibility
- RNs/NPs: Professional Responsibility and Accountability
- RPNs: Professional Responsibility and Accountability
