Many of us remember what it felt like to be a nursing student. Balancing coursework, clinical placements, work, and the pressure of figuring out what comes next was not easy. That stage of the journey can feel exciting, overwhelming, and uncertain all at once. At the Alberta Association of Nurses (AAN), we believe students should not have to navigate it alone.

That is why AAN offers free student memberships to nursing students across Alberta.

This membership is designed to give students early access to information, support, and professional connections before they graduate and step fully into practice. It is a simple way to help students feel informed, included, and connected to the profession they are preparing to join.

Why Early Connection Matters

For students, being part of a professional association can make nursing feel less abstract and more real. Through AAN, students can learn about professional roles, leadership opportunities, advocacy efforts, and continuing education, while beginning to understand how nurses come together to support one another.

It helps them feel like they belong. It reminds them they are not alone.

Early connection also helps students build confidence. It shows them that there is a place for them beyond school, and that experienced nurses are willing to share knowledge, guidance, and encouragement.

How Members Can Make a Difference

AAN members play an important role in welcoming students into the profession. If you teach, precept, supervise placements, or work alongside students, your recommendation carries weight.

Sometimes all it takes is a brief conversation. Asking a student if they have joined AAN or letting them know that student membership is free can open the door. Sharing your own experiences with AAN, whether through conferences, professional development, leadership, or advocacy, helps students understand the value of staying connected after graduation.

A Simple Invitation With Lasting Impact

Encouraging a student to join AAN is a small gesture, but it can make a meaningful difference. It helps students feel supported, seen, and connected early in their careers.

If you know a nursing student, consider starting the conversation. Your encouragement could help shape how they experience the profession from the very beginning.
