What is the new committee?

“The Government Relations Committee (GRC) is for all AAN members to identify and champion nursing advocacy issues.”

Why is AAN creating this committee?

“We’ve heard members asking for more advocacy—for a way to get their voice involved in policies and politics. The GRC empowers members to speak out for nurses and the nursing profession through direct government relations.

“This is an exciting and tangible way our members can sink their hands into the political process and will showcase nurses’ expertise and passion for shaping the future of the nursing profession.”

How is this committee going to work?

“Members of the GRC will be educating and advocating to their local government officials on nursing issues. You’ll be speaking directly to your MLA, giving them the information and education they require for what nurses need to be successful and supported in Alberta.

“The topics we will be bringing to our MLAs will be discussed during committee meetings and then approved by AAN’s Board of Directors.”

What are the committee members’ responsibilities?

“The key is to get involved—truly involved in key issues surrounding our profession.

“You’ll bring the nursing professional issues you’re passionate about to the GRC for discussion, and then we get to the exciting part—boots on the ground with your local politicians, regardless of the political party.  AAN will be taking these same issues to senior leaders of government, such as the Premier, Leader of the Opposition, Health Minister, health critics, to ensure change happens to support nurses and the nursing profession.”

When is the first meeting?

“The committee’s first meeting will be held online at 7 p.m., November 21, 2024.

“At the first meeting, we will discuss the best day and time for future meetings. The meetings will be recorded for members who cannot attend.  The recordings will ensure that you can still fully participate even when you can’t make it to the committee meeting live.”

How do I get involved?

“This is a chance for members to speak up and speak out to our government. We need the voices of nurses across Alberta to bring current nursing issues to the forefront of politics!”
